William and Daniel McCarthy were found dead in their Dublin home. It is believed that William died first leaving Daniel alone to care for himself. Daniel never seek any help or communicate outside the home which led neighbor to be concerned. The neighbor called police and they discovered the bodies of the brothers.
The cause of deaths were declared as natural causes. The mourners assumed Daniel died of loneliness weeks after his brother’s death. William was known to be a caregiver for Daniel.
Their funeral was held at Deaf Village and attended by hundreds of mourners. Later, their caskets were moved their native Dingle for burial.
The deaths of the brothers revealed the “devastating effects of social isolation for senior citizens and for the senior deaf community in Ireland”, according to The Irish Deaf Society.
