DeSean Welch was killed by a gunman after attending a football game with friends at Rancho Verde High School on a Friday night. Welch and a friend were approached by an unknown armed man who started asking questions and then they tries to explain to him that they were deaf. The gunman followed them and then opened fire at the van after the teens drove away and left the area. Welch later died at the hospital.

Welch was an aspiring ball player and popular teenager who had passion for the sport. He was a fifth-year student at California School for the Deaf-Riverside and played varsity basketball.
