]]> Norman Rogers III Passed Away From His InjuriesA Hyattsville man who is deaf died after his home caught fire early Sunday morning, his brother and nephew say.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 5:28 a.m. in the 5900 block of Riggs Road.

They say the fire started in the home’s basement before spreading to its first and second floors.

Firefighters rescued one man, 55-year-old Norman Rogers III, from the home’s second floor and took him to a nearby hospital, where he later died. His mother and nephew made it out alive and the nephew was unable to reach his uncle. 

He graduated from the Maryland School of the Deaf.

]]> Manny Cortez Hit By Two Vehicles In The StreetA deaf man was hit and killed by two vehicles in District Heights. He was later identified as Manny Cortez of Brooklyn, New York.

The victim was later identified as 25-year-old Manuel Cortez of Brooklyn, New York on September 17,

Both the drivers of the SUV and the Mercedes were not injured and remained at the scene. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.

He was 25.

]]> Umar Khalif King - New JerseyA deaf New Jersey man, Umar King, was killed when stolen SUV crashed into him while he waits for his ride home from overnight shit at Newark Airport. The driver and passengers ran after the crash occurred. All suspects were later caught and charged for the police chase and death of an innocent man.

King was well-known in the deaf community. So many folks came to pay respects to King as they celebrated his life at the funeral at The Heavenly Temple COGIC on January 31.

King attended Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C and also attended Bowie State University in Maryland. He was a father of 9 years old daughter. He had a huge love for basketball and huge fan of Lebron James. He has taught American Sign Language (ASL) as a volunteer.

ends and family called on the service to be a celebration of King’s life. King, the father of a 9-year-old girl, was a member of the deaf community and volunteered as a sign language instructor.

The service included music selections by His Hands Deaf Choir and Mountaintop Adult Choir. King is being buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Linden.
