Gallaudet Theatre Alum Rita Corey Passed Away

“A luminous #deaftalent light has gone out. It is with sorrow that we inform you that one of our more prominent #gallaudettheatre alums, the lovely, multitalented, and fearless Rita Corey, passed away this morning.

In an era before social media became synonymous with Deaf arts advocacy, she was an actor with The National Theatre of the Deaf for three years before joining the Musign troupe for another six, and went on to become the first Deaf person to receive a MFA degree in stage directing, from Catholic University. She was a theatre professor at Gallaudet for a time before she made her most impactful mark on the Maryland School for the Deaf’s theatre program.
She was a force, an inspiration to countless young Deaf performing artists, and she will be missed”
